What kinds of things do you do?

Meetup Readings

Come join us for our play readings in Manhattan! Each week we sit around a table and read a play aloud. We do a different play each time, and we'll provide a digital link to the script so you don't have to bring your own copy. No acting experience required—we're just here to have a good time!

We suggest bringing a digital device to read the play on, as we may change the play depending on the number of attendees. If you don't want to read, that's totally fine—we always appreciate new faces and an audience. And of course, feel free to bring friends!

We host our readings in a public atrium in midtown Manhattan on Saturday afternoons and are open to all community members.

Staged Readings

Want to experience new plays, but don’t want to read along? Well, you’re in luck! Every few months we produce fully staged readings that highlight some of MSP’s favorite contemporary plays. Afterwards there is a meet and greet with the cast and crew that is open to all ticket holders.

We host our staged readings at The Flea Theatre in downtown Manhattan and are open to everyone. More ticking info for our upcoming show can be found on our calendar and our Meetup page.

What do people think of our work?

  • This is my all-time favorite group. You don't have to be an actor to participate (I'm not!), you just have to be able to read words on a page. Or you can be an audience if you prefer...as long as you appreciate a good story. One week I was a geriatric grandmother with Alzheimer's; the next time I was the wife of a man who was in love with a goat; and a few months ago I was a teenage girl in a punk band. Can't get better than that.

  • I am really enjoying attending this group, and I now prioritize the weekly session in my social diary. I truly appreciate all the work that the facilitator Austin puts into making these sessions such a success. They are both super low key and relaxed, and very well paced and productive. I love it that a group of perfect strangers can come together and voice a brand new play (to them), often unseen, bring the story to life out loud in two hours on a Saturday afternoon, with very little prior play reading experience, and then enjoy the immediacy of a discussion whilst the play is still really fresh in the mind. For me it's way better than a book club discussion - everyone has always just read the play! It's such a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Today we were reflecting that it feels like a form of play - coming together as adults to read together - it unlocks some of that deeply buried uninhibited playfulness and imagination as we all 'stage' the play in our heads as we go along. It's good for my mental health and a good workout for my brain. Everyone should be doing it!

Austin runs a meeting with a fun, low-key, friendly atmosphere that makes it easy to feel at home, while still delving into these great works of theater with the group.   • I recently moved to NYC and found this amazing MeetUp group! It is so much fun reading and discussing a different play each week. Austin is a wealth of theater and play knowledge. The best part is, you don't have to be an actor! Each week, you're given a part to read, or if you're not interested in playing a role, you can just listen to the play. There is always a lively discussion afterwards, and it's so wonderful listening and sharing everyone's perspectives. It's a very casual, welcoming, stimulating group. Come join us!

  • I’ve been a part of (and even facilitated) many play-reading groups in New York, but this group is by far the most warm, , and well-organized. Austin has read more plays than anyone I’ve ever encountered; his play selections are thoughtful and he’s an excellent facilitator. The group has a number of regulars who are as kind and friendly as they are committed and engaged—all without being competitive. The location is beautiful. I look forward to attending many more.
